Biography
Stanley Beck
was born and raised in New Orleans. He attended elementary school in New
Orleans and Metairie, and graduated from De La Salle High School in 1961.
Within weeks of his graduation, he enlisted into the U. S. Air Force, and
served on active duty for four years, most of that time as an electronics
instructor.
Upon his discharge, he, his wife
and their young daughter moved back to New Orleans. After working for a few
years, he began to take art classes at night, at the John McCrady Art School on
Bourbon Street. It was here that he developed his life-long relationship with
the French Quarter culture and architecture, which set the tone for his
paintings for years to come.
Finding
himself unemployed in 1970, with a young family to support, he began to sell
his art at Jackson Square. It was here that his style of painting crystallized,
reflecting not only the influences of his peers and works that he studied in
museums, but also the influence of what he saw and felt while in the French
Quarter. For the next three decades, he worked around Jackson Square, part time
while working at other jobs, and at times, full time.
Over the
years, his paintings were purchased by locals and visitors alike. These
paintings are in private collections, not only throughout the United States,
but also in other countries throughout the world. In more recent years, he gave
up the outdoor life of working at Jackson Square, and now occupies himself
mostly with photography,
selling occasional paintings and painting prints through his on-line
Internet Gallery.
